MCRC Vintage Trans Am Class Rules 2007-2008 The Trans Am Class Will Run On Carpet For Now In the future we might run outside
Magic City RC are undertaking the creation of a new class for our racing program. The intended purposes for the creation of this class(es) are manifold and include: Providing a class that operates at a performance level where new racers can learn to drive their car. We recognize the fact that current “stock” racing classes are too fast and that a slower class is needed that minimizes damage and frustration for people entering the hobby. Creation of a class that has a higher likelihood of attracting new racers by offering an opportunity to race familiar (and popular) “Muscle Cars” while at the same time being completely distinguishable from the driving experience of the existing Touring Car classes. Creating a class that give racers an opportunity to get some more life from “obsolete” racing equipment…chassis, batteries, etc. To this end we have created and will implement a Vintage Trans Am class to be held at club race meetings for the 2007-2008 racing season. The class shall be run according to the rules herein. We will run two separate classes, a Pro Trans Am and an Apprentice Trans Am. Both will be very similar to each other creating minimal cost for the racer to “move up” from Apprentice to Pro. We shall attempt to address all issues relative to this new class that we can identify up front, but be aware that any new endeavor carries the risk of unknowns. If one or more of these unknowns appear to upset any competitive balance we reserve the right to make appropriate changes to the rules in an attempt to redress any oversight or loophole in this document. Whether or not “on the fly” changes are made it is our intent that the rules be reviewed and, as necessary, altered based on what was learned in the 2007-2008 racing season. The class shall comply with ROAR rules for Touring Cars with the exception of the specific rules found below. If there are any conflicts between these rules and ROAR rules shall then the MCRC Vintage Trans Am rules shall take precedence.
1525 grams
Any all-wheel drive Touring Car chassis shall be eligible to compete. We will set a minimum weight by weighing the competing cars and adding a little weight to the heaviest chassis, electronics, motor and body combo to set the minimum weight. This weight will be strictly enforced at every race that we run.
The ONLY tires permitted in the Vintage TA classes are the HPI “Vintage” series rubber tires with their included inserts. These tires are available in 26mm (HPI #4793) and 31mm (HPI #4797) widths and either width or combination of widths is acceptable for competition. Feel free to contact Scott Smith or Rick Keiser for fitment information. The ONLY wheels permitted in the Vintage TA classes are the HPI “Vintage” series wheels. These are available in widths to suit either tire width, further they are available in 3 different styles (5-spoke, 8-spoke, and Stock Car) and several finish options (chrome, matte chrome, black, white, gunmetal, etc). Any of these styles and/or finishes are acceptable for competition.
ONLY BODIES FROM THIS LIST SHALL BE ELIGIBLE FOR COMPETITION!!
HPI #17508 1966 Shelby GT350 Mustang #17519 1966 Mustang GT #17494 1968 Camaro Z28 #17510 1970 AAR ‘Cuda (NOT the Hemi Cuda which is actually a Monster Truck body) Parma #10141 1970 Boss Mustang #10143 1969 Camaro Z28
If you identify a body from the general era described here that is not on this list please contact Scott Smith or Rick Keiser. If it should be on the list we will see that it is added BUT, as before, ask before you buy.
Bodies must be cut not higher than the body manufacturer’s cut line(s). No “slammed” bodies allowed!! All cars must have three (or more) racing numbers affixed. These numbers must be affixed to both sides of the car and on the hood. A fourth number on the trunk is optional. The actual number is of the entrant’s choice but should look like the racing numbers found on cars of the late ‘60’s or early ‘70’s era. Self-adhesive vinyl roundels (white circles) and numbers will be available for purchase at a nominal fee at the race meetings. While not mandatory, it would be nice if the bodies are painted in a “period authentic” manner as regards colors and schemes. This doesn’t mean the body has to be painted to duplicate a particular “real” race car from that era, merely that the body should LOOK like something one MIGHT have seen back then. Fluorescent paints, wild graphics, etc hadn’t been invented yet. If you look at the cars on the Historic Trans Am site ( http://www.trans-amseries.com/ ) you can get an idea of what cars from this era looked like. As you can see, fairly simple paint schemes were the norm. It’s not our intent to be absolute sticklers on this point, but it WOULD be nice…
Both Pro Trans Am and Apprentice Trans Am classes shall use 4-cell battery packs. This is good news as a) it keeps speeds down and minimizes crash damage and b) it keeps battery costs in check. A 4-cell pack generally costs 2/3 what a 6-cell pack costs. For example, a racer can purchase two six cell packs and create THREE 4-cell packs from them. This should be entirely adequate for a race day. Eligible batteries shall be any 4800 or lower mah rated cell found on the ROAR site. Many racers already have old cells meeting this requirement that aren’t being used. If you don’t have any you will find that these cells are plentiful and CHEAP.
Trans Am entrants shall run any ROAR-approved Stock motor.
