SHORT COURSE TRUCK RACING RULES  2011

For the 2011 off-road season Magic City RC (MCRC) shall recognize 3 classes of Short Course trucks for racing purposes plus a “catch-all” Basher/Beginner class for any electric RC vehicle that does not meet the specifications for one of the classes.

The recognized classes shall be:

2wd ROAR Spec

4wd ROAR Open

Out-of-Box Blitz

Beginner / Catch-all Class

This class will be, pretty much, run what you brung in terms of motor, battery, etc. This is for trucks that do not meet the requirements of the standard classes. “Bashers” for lack of a better word. THIS CLASS IS NON-COMPETITIVE…no points, etc, and will only be run if there are 3 or more trucks present to compete. This class is meant to give someone a taste of organized racing and a little time to get their truck in compliance with the rules for one of the standard classes without compromising the integrity of those classes by allowing non-spec trucks to compete in them. NOTE: “win” twice in this class and you are required to move up / out…no cherry picking ;).

Before you get “lost” in the rules below, which may or may not seem complicated we shall provide a “Racer’s Summary” overview of some general racing rules and the specific rules by class.

GENERAL RULES--BATTERIES

ALL short course trucks shall be powered by a 2-cell (2s / 7.4 volt) LiPo or 6-cell (7.2 volt) NiCd or NiMH battery pack.

LiPo batteries MUST be hard-cased from the manufacturer. MCRC STRONGLY recommend ROAR-approved batteries but will not require this for outdoor racing. Keep in mind if you wish to race on-road you must have ROAR-approved batteries.

GENERAL RULES--MOTORS

Motors allowed for the ROAR Spec class shall be either ROAR-approved 17.5 brushless motors OR ROAR-approved 27-turn brushed motors. NOTE: Brushless motor MUST be specifically identified as a 17.5 spec brushless motor…we will not be allowing “XXX Kv equivalents”.

2wd ROAR Spec Truck

We will be following ALL the ROAR rules as found at http://www.roarracing.com/downloads/2010_ROAR_Rule_Book.pdf (p.71-73) with the following additions / exceptions:

1) MCRC shall require a “spec” tire (per ROAR recommendations). This tire shall be the HPI Maxxis belted tire in ‘D’ compound. These can be purchased pre-mounted/glued or loose and mounted to your choice of wheel. These have been tested on the surface we will be racing on and work just fine.

2) MCRC shall require that all speed controls with dynamic timing adjustment, etc, shall be run in their “Spec” (“blinky”) mode.

3) Please note that ROAR rules make front and rear bumpers MANDATORY. Some trucks do not come with a rear bumper but it is generally easy to adapt one from another manufacturer.

4) Mudflaps and interior / driver tray are STRONGLY RECOMMENDED.

4wd ROAR Open truck

We will be following ALL the ROAR rules as found at http://www.roarracing.com/downloads/2010_ROAR_Rule_Book.pdf (p.71-73) with the following additions / exceptions:

1) Per recent ROAR decision, 550-size motors will be allowed in 4wd open trucks (NOT in 2wd trucks)

2) 2wd Mod trucks (trucks not in compliance with 2wd Spec rules above) shall be incorporated into this class

Out-of-Box Blitz Class

With very few exceptions, these are to be 100% stock RTR Blitz trucks driven with the kit-supplied radio, etc. NO MODIFICATIONS AND VERY FEW SUBSTITUTIONS ARE ALLOWED.

So now the specific rules. Don’t get freaked out, if you are having trouble understanding something give Scottrik a call and ask. Generally the above “Racer Summaries” should get you where you need to be!

FULL 2011 MCRC Short Course Truck rules

General Short Course Truck rules

ROAR has a set of rules specific to Short Course Trucks. These rules can be found on p.71-73 of the 2010 ROAR Rule Book (download your copy at http://www.roarracing.com/downloads/2010_ROAR_Rule_Book.pdf ) Generally speaking, the rules require ROAR-approved motors and batteries.

Batteries

Any HARDCASE 2-cell LiPo or 6-cell NiMH or NiCd battery pack may be used in any class of Short Course Truck racing with two warnings:

1) If you wish to use your batteries to race in MCRC indoor on-road events any LiPo battery MUST be ROAR-approved.

2) BE AWARE THAT THE SC-15 ESC (required in Out of Box class) DOES NOT HAVE A “LIPO CUT-OFF” FEATURE. Event organizers and all supporting entities strongly recommend using an add-on LiPo cut-off device (such as the Novak 5470 2s LiPo Smart-Stop) if using a LiPo battery in this class to prevent possible damage to batteries and other potential dangers from over-discharge of LiPo batteries. Implementation of this recommended device is left solely to entrant/driver discretion.

NO 3s LiPos or 7-cell NiMH or NiCd batteries are permitted in any class!

Specific battery and motor approval lists can be found at http://www.roarracing.com/?page_id=14

Bodies

At this time ROAR does not list approved bodies for Short Course Truck racing. Their Short Course Truck rules, however, show a comprehensive set of dimensions that approved bodies must meet. The intent of these rules is to keep the trucks “real looking”. It can be assumed that any body that is provided as original equipment with any manufacturer’s kit or RTR truck meets these requirements and is, thus, legal. Less certain are aftermarket bodies offered by several manufacturers. As with all rules, it is up to the entrant / driver to ensure their truck meets all applicable rules including dimensional requirements.

Bodies are required to completely cover the top of tires tread when looked at from above with the wheels in the straight-ahead position.

ANOTHER NOTE RE: BODIES…ROAR specifies a minimum height to the top of the roof of 199mm or 7.835 inches. This height is measured with the truck sitting at rest in ready-to-race trim. When fitting bodies it is CRITICAL that you establish the base ride height of your truck chassis BEFORE mounting the body and trimming body posts, etc. This aspect can and will be randomly teched as well as compliance with other dimensional standards for bodies. Do yourself a favor…allow for a certain amount of “settling” of suspension and adjust your body somewhat above the minimum standard. Just in case.

ROAR Spec Two-Wheel Drive Short Course Truck Class Rules

This class will follow ROAR rules for 1/10 Short Course Trucks as found on p.71-73 in the 2010 ROAR Rule Book ( download your copy http://www.roarracing.com/downloads/2010_ROAR_Rule_Book.pdf ) but with a couple additions as follow:

1) Brushless esc’s must be non-timing adjustable. Timing adjustable brushless esc’s MUST be in “blinky” spec mode.

2) SPEC TIRE FOR THIS CLASS IS THE SAME HPI #103337 Maxis Trepador Belted D-compound tire as is used in the Out of Box class. This tire may be purchased as HPI #103336 pre-mounted on HPI wheels. Any wheel that accommodates this tire may be used regardless of manufacturer or style.

3) Mud flaps MUST be on the truck at the beginning of any heat or main race. Kit mud flaps may be reinforced using any commercially available or custom-created washer(s) at entrant / driver’s sole discretion. Mud flaps may be commercially sourced or home-made.

Other than these club-specific rules the class is open to any Short Course Truck chassis from any manufacturer that meets the criteria set forth in the ROAR rules. This class is also open to any chassis modification or upgrading with aftermarket or “factory” upgrade parts.

Entrant / driver is 100% responsible for the compliance of their truck to the appropriate rules. If you have any doubt…ASK!

ROAR Open (Mod) Four-Wheel Drive Short Course Truck rules

This class will follow ROAR rules for 1/10 Short Course Trucks as found on p.71-73 in the 2010 ROAR Rule Book (download your copy http://www.roarracing.com/downloads/2010_ROAR_Rule_Book.pdf ).

This class IS an open/mod class. Battery and motor must conform to ROAR rules and approvals. Currently ONLY 2s LiPo and 6-cell NiMH or NiCd batteries are allowed (LiPo MUST be on ROAR approval list by number). Per recent ROAR announcement 550-size 2-pole motors will be allowed in with the “standard” 540-size motors. 550-size MOTORS ARE ONLY ALLOWED IN OPEN FOUR-WHEEL—NOT IN ANY 2-WHEEL CLASS, STOCK OR OPEN.

Tire choice is up to the entrant/driver.

Body rules as outlined in the ROAR rules shall be enforced.

Mod 2-Wheel Drive Short Course trucks and trucks otherwise not in compliance with the Stock / Spec class rules above will be assigned to this class.

Out-of-Box Blitz Class rules

1. This class has one and only one acceptable vehicle, the RTR HPI Blitz. RTR means one of the kits that comes with a pre-assembled truck combined with the HPI TF-1 radio transmitter and SC-15 esc.

2. Any truck being raced in this class must be driven using the kit-supplied radio transmitter, receiver, servo, speed controller (esc) and motor. Any appropriate crystal may be employed to use any FCC and ROAR compliant frequency provided they plug into the kit transmitter and receiver with no modification to either the crystal itself or the transmitter / receiver.

3. No aftermarket or factory upgrade parts are allowed. ANY WORN OR BROKEN PART MUST BE REPLACED WITH THE RTR-SPEC PART BY PART NUMBER AS CALLED OUT IN THE RTR BLITZ MANUAL. The ONLY allowed deviations from this rule are specifically identified under “Approved Substitutions” below.

4. Any shims, spacers, shock springs, shock oils, shock pistons, greases, lubes, etc may be used. These are all considered standard maintenance and/or tuning aids.

5. Pinion and spur gear must remain the RTR combination, 88 tooth spur gear and 18 tooth pinion.

6. Truck body may be replaced with any of the pre-painted HPI Maxis ATTK bodies OR the HPI Maxis ATTK clear body with a custom paint scheme may be used. No other bodies are allowed.

7. The ONLY permitted tire in this class is tire that comes standard in the RTR Blitz--the HPI #103337 Maxis Trepador Belted D-compound tire and insert. These may also be purchased as the HPI #103336 tires pre-mounted on HPI wheels. Entrant/driver may use any of the HPI Blitz wheel styles or colors they wish if they desire to “customize” the look of their truck with no performance benefit.

8. Mud flaps MUST be on the truck at the beginning of any heat or main race. Kit mud flaps may be reinforced using any commercially available or custom-created washer(s) at entrant / driver’s sole discretion.

9. Catch-all rule: if it isn’t specifically allowed by the above rules it must be assumed to be not legal. General rule of thumb should be that if you have to even think “I wonder if…” it is probably not allowed.

10. Frequency conflict(s): every effort will be made to accommodate every racer in every heat. To aid in this effort ALL entrants/racers should have at least one alternate set of crystals, ideally two sets. Crystals are readily available and inexpensive. In the case of resolving frequency conflicts, absolute priority will be given to entrants/drivers who have at least attempted to have an alternative frequency for their car.

11. RADIO IMPOUND: This class takes us to the “bad old days” of only six available frequencies using the 27MHz kit radio. The bugaboo is that if someone, by accident or on purpose, turns on their radio or leaves it on in the pit area it will negatively affect the car on the track trying to race on that frequency. To eliminate this as an area of concern ALL non-2.4gHz transmitters will be maintained in a radio impound for the duration of the race or practice day. Entrants/drivers are responsible for turning their transmitter in prior to the day’s racing and after every heat. Entrants/drivers are further responsible for putting identifying markings on their transmitter—remember, they all look exactly alike from the kit. Do yourself a favor—put some wild colored stickers and ribbons on your transmitter so it can be easily recognized.

APPROVED SUBSTITUTIONS: From time to time, due to availability concerns, durability concerns, competitive balance, etc, it may be necessary to come up with a substitute part or product for the stock HPI component. Every attempt will be made to make sure such a substitution cannot create any sort of advantage. Such substitutions will be specifically listed here. Any substitution not listed here is not allowed.

* Futaba 3003 steering servo (the standard HPI SF-1 is the Futaba 3003 with HPI’s sticker on it. The HPI servo is almost twice as expensive and less available than the identical Futaba.)

* Futaba 3004 steering servo IDENTICAL performance spec to the Futaba 3003, just adds a bearing to the output to enhance durability. Longer life, about the same price as the HPI SF-1.

* Associated 9180 servo horn set (replacement HPI servo horn requires purchasing entire steering rack/servo saver set, Associated pieces almost identical less than 1/3 cost).

* Yokomo YZS204 servo horn set (replacement HPI servo horn requires purchasing entire steering rack/servo saver set, Yokomo pieces almost identical less than 1/4 cost).

* McMaster-Carr # 5233T48 silicon o-rings (diff seals—more resistant to leaking, much less expensive than HPI o-rings)
